Apex Legends: Eclipse – Broken Moon – Windswept and Broken Cliffs

In Season 15 of Apex Legends, I had the privilege of working on our rock sets for our newest map, Broken Moon.

For these rocks, we wanted to capture two sides of the moon - the natural, windswept and alien landscape of the moon as it
originally existed, as well as the freshly ruined and destroyed portions. Obviously, a challenge to capture such
drastically different looksets and blend everything together, but I think we landed with everything in a really great place.

For these rocks, we used a combination of locally sourced photoscanned materials, a few pieces from Megascans, some hand sculpted
goodness, and combined it in a variety of ways to get the set seen below.
We also used a handful of detail texture maps to help the rocks hold up at a variety of scales, as well as add pops of color
where needed - It's a barren moon, but we didn't want the end result to be totally devoid of life.

Thanks for looking!

The Windswept Cliffs: We really wanted to hit something very alien looking here, with lots of weather-worn rocks dotting the landscape.

Supporting the cliffs were our pillar rocks - Mainly meant as cover for cover, but with a side purpose of adding a more alien-feel to the map with their odd shapes.

The Broken Cliffs: We really wanted to contrast the natural, eroded cliffs with this freshly broken set, in order to help sell the idea that the moon had recently been broken apart.

These are the main components of our rock set, though additional rocks for more micro and granular dressing were created as well by other artists.

We had a lot of really great scan data from a previous project that we were able to repurpose and turn into some nice, tiling detail materials.

The materials helped us to unify the visuals of some of our more gameplay-level rocks across the map.
The trick was making it porous, without making it too busy.

Lastly - I explored some gemstone materials for some early ideas we had on the map. Remnants of this material still exist, and can be found in a couple corners of the map.
This one was straight substance, no scan data.
